// Messaging

What Does a Check Mark Mean on WhatsApp?

The one check mark, double check mark, and blue check marks show where your message is in its journey.

One check mark

Your message was sent but has not been delivered to the other phone yet. It may be offline.

Two grey check marks

Your message was delivered to the other person's phone. They may not have opened it.

Two blue check marks

The message was read. If someone turns off read receipts, you will not see blue check marks.

Good to knowA single check mark that never changes does not by itself prove you were blocked. The person may simply be offline. Emoji such as ✅ ❌ 💯 also look different on Apple, Google, Windows, and Samsung devices.

// Meaning and use

When to Use a Check Mark

A check mark can mean done, correct, approved, or selected. Context decides which.

Exams and quizzes

In many places a tick marks a right answer and a cross marks a wrong one. It is not universal: in Japan a circle (⭕) usually marks a correct answer and ✕ marks a wrong one.

To-do lists

Use ✓ or ☑ for finished tasks and ☐ for open ones. A ✗ or struck-through text is a common way to show a dropped task.

Ballots and forms

An empty box ☐ is left for options not chosen, and ☑ or ☒ marks the choice. Pick one style and keep it the same throughout.

// Questions

Check Mark Questions

What is the difference between ✓ and ✔?

✓ (U+2713) is a thin check mark and ✔ (U+2714) is the heavy, bolder version. Both are plain text characters, so they take the colour and font of the text around them.

What is the green check mark emoji?

✅, the white heavy check mark, is the one most platforms draw as a green check. ✔️ is usually drawn as a plain dark check without a box.

Is there a blue check mark emoji?

No. Unicode has no blue check mark. Blue ticks and verified badges are drawn by each app. Use the blue icon above, or colour a ✔ with your editor's text colour.

How do I make a check mark on the keyboard?

Copy one from this page, use Alt+X in Word, the Character Viewer on Mac, or the emoji keyboard on your phone. The guide above has the steps.

What does 💯 mean?

The hundred points emoji means 100%, full marks, or complete agreement. People use it to praise something or to say “absolutely”.

What does ✔️ mean in a text message?

Usually done, approved, or yes. ❌ usually means no or a problem.

Can I use a check mark as a bullet point?

Yes. Paste ✓ at the start of each line in a resume, email, or social bio. Use the same symbol on every line so the list looks tidy.

Why does my check mark show as a box?

The font you are using does not include that character. Try a different font, or use the emoji version (✅ or ✔️), which your device draws itself.
